Summer 2007

Yesterday, I watched this movie "Summer of 2007". It was a very nice movie that I have watched for quite some time now. The story revolves around 5 medical students from a leading medical college. From the city life these students have to take up a month long medical assignment in the rural villages of maharashtra. When these students start living here in this village they come face to face with a problem that these villagers are battling for few years now. The problem of farmers committing suicides for the inability to pay back the loans. The sahukars who lend money to these farmers at a very high interest rate make life miserable for these farmers. The interest rate charged to these farmers is as high as 40%.( Will we ever imagine taking any loan at an interest rate of 40%). After watching this movie atleast my eyes have opened to the life of a poor common man of this country. One very important thing shown in the movie is the concept of micro finance. This scheme that would definately bring down this rate of suicides by the farmers. For this country to grow and overcome all its problems one very basic change is required and that is corruption and inappropriate use of power has to stop.
